The Woods Point Dyke Swarm running from Jamieson in the northwest of the goldfield near Lake Eildon and southeast for some 100kms down beyond the town of Walhalla, comprises one of the most significant gold fields in Australian history. Known production was between 150-200 tonnes or ~6-7 Million ounces of Gold since the eastern Victorian gold rushes of the early 1860's but much was unreported in the early years due to the pletora of individual mining claims so figures are conservative. Indeed there was reported to be over 100 indivual claims just on Morning Star Hill (atop the Morning Star dyke) alone. It was the aggregation of scores of these early mining claims that led to the sinking of the shaft still used at the Morning Star Goldmine at Woods Point and to one of Australia's first publicly listed mining sites.
Production grades were often around an ounce per tonne in many of the mafic and gabbroic 'dyke' hosted deposits. Morning Star Gold has gradually since 1994 rebuilt its 100% owned 'Morning Star Goldmine' with a view to re-commencing gold production, which was achieved late in 2011 - the first production at the site for over 50 years. The main vertical shaft & many drives to the mine's 10 Level (~310 metres underground), have been reaccessed and are being prepared for increased mining. The Morning Star Goldmine was at one point in the early 1940s Australia's premier gold mine run by Gold Mines of Australia (WMC Ltd). WMC controlled the asset between 1934 and 1959 when it was Australia's premier listed gold production house.
The fascinating and rich history of the Woods Point district has being brought to life in three websites put together by Morning Star Gold.
